Amps & Octane
Effective: April 26, 2026 · Last updated: August 13, 2026
Amps & Octane (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is a personal vehicle fuel, charging,
and expense tracker operated by LifeByTheMile. This policy explains what we
collect, why, who processes it, and the choices and rights you have.
In plain terms: we don’t track your location in the background,
we don’t sell your personal information, we don’t use it for cross-context
behavioural advertising, and we don’t use cookies.
Information we collect
Almost everything we hold is information you enter to track your
vehicles. This includes:
Account information — your email address, a password
hash, and an authentication identifier (handled by Firebase
Authentication; we never store your raw password).
Vehicle details — make, model, year, colour,
specifications, and an optional vehicle photo.
Trailers and vehicle modifications you choose to add.
Fuel, charging, and trip logs — odometer readings,
cost, energy or fuel added, battery state of charge, ambient
temperature, and any notes you write.
Expenses and recurring expenses.
Locations — names and capabilities of the gas stations
and chargers you save. Public fuel/charging locations may include
optional GPS coordinates and address. Locations you mark as Home
or Work never store coordinates or an address (see below).
Receipt and vehicle photos you attach (stored privately
under your account).
Reminders.
Driver profile — experience points, level, streaks, and
achievement badges.
Crash reports and diagnostics — device model, OS
version, and stack traces when the app crashes.
What we do not collect
No advertising identifier. The app does not collect or
use the Android Advertising ID (AAID) or any equivalent device
advertising identifier. Ads shown to free-tier users are
non-personalised (see “Advertising” below).
No VIN or licence plate. We do not collect your
Vehicle Identification Number or licence plate.
No background location. We never access your location
while the app is in the background.
No cookies and no sale of personal
information.
Location
Location data is collected only when you explicitly use a GPS or
map feature — for example, tagging a fuel or charging location.
We do not continuously or silently track your device.
To protect your most sensitive places, any location you mark as
Home or Work is stored with
no coordinates and no address — only your chosen label.
Advertising
Free-tier users may see ads served by Google AdMob. These ads are
non-personalised: they are not targeted using an
advertising identifier or a behavioural profile, and we do not share your
data for cross-context behavioural advertising. Premium users see no ads.
Where required (e.g. the EU/UK), a consent prompt may appear on first
launch.
How we use your information
To provide the app’s core features — recording and displaying your
vehicles, logs, expenses, efficiency, and reports.
To sync your data across your devices and back it up.
To send reminders you have set up.
To operate premium subscriptions and validate purchases.
To diagnose crashes and understand aggregate feature usage so we can
improve the app.
Third-party services
We use a small set of processors to run the app:
Google Firebase — authentication, database (Firestore),
file storage, crash reporting (Crashlytics), performance monitoring, and
analytics.
Google AdMob — non-personalised ads for free-tier
users.
OpenStreetMap — map tiles for the location picker.
Weather data provider — anonymous, coordinate-based
lookups to record ambient temperature for a log (no account data is
sent).
Each processor handles data under its own terms; we share only what is
necessary for these functions.
Data sharing
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for
cross-context behavioural advertising. We disclose information only
to the processors above, or where required by law.
Data retention and deletion
Your data is retained while your account is active. You may delete
individual entries at any time, or delete your entire account from
Settings → Account → Delete Account. Deletion removes your data
from our active systems within 30 days.
Your rights
You may access, correct, delete, and export your data. Premium subscribers
can export to CSV in-app; other users may request an export by email.
Depending on where you live, you have specific rights:
Canada (PIPEDA) and British Columbia (PIPA) — access to
and correction of your personal information.
EU/UK (GDPR) — access, rectification, erasure,
restriction, portability, and objection. Our legal basis is performance
of our service to you and your consent (for ads where applicable).
California (CCPA/CPRA) — know, delete, correct, and opt
out of “sale”/“sharing.” We do not sell or share your personal
information as those terms are defined.
To exercise any right, contact us using the details below.
Security
We use Firebase Authentication and encrypt data in transit with TLS. Access
to your records is restricted to your account, and file uploads are stored
in a per-user private namespace. Optional email two-factor authentication
is available in Settings.
Children’s privacy
Amps & Octane is not intended for anyone under 17, and we do not
knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be
reflected by the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, noted in
the app.
